I qualified as a driving instructor in my early twenties, worked
around family commitments and children for the next 15 years, first
as a contractor for a large company with a dozen dual control
vehicles used to teach driving and later had my own driving school.

We lived on a large tract of land and they were able to move the car
along a very long driveway (being private property we were not
breaking any laws) and we also had close family living on a farm,

By the time my children reached their teens I realized that their
skill and knowledge far surpassed the average student's. This lead
me to investigate the reasons WHY. At the time there were
conflicting opinions among driving instructors as to what they were
expected to teach their students. Some believed that teaching a
student to pass the driving test was enough, while others went
further by actually teaching their students to drive a vehicle and
believe me when I say that there is a HUGE difference between the
two.
I decided that it was time to do something to address this problem,
so... I sold my driving school and went to work for the local
college ( part of a major university) as they had just started a
program preparing teenagers to obtain their " Learner's Permit" and
also giving them practical driving training and they were looking
for experienced staff.
While working at the college I had the opportunity to go back to
school as part of my stuff development benefits. So I decided to
realise my lifelong dream of becoming an "Art Teacher".
I won't bore you with the tribulations of a mature age student
working full-time and studying for my teaching degree. It took
almost 3 years (including my prior learning recognition and work
experience) to get my teaching degree.

what's "Art" got to do with Driving?"
Well
you may laugh here Ha..Ha..; I ended up with a teaching degree in
vocational education.
This qualification together with my previous experience allowed me
to work with mature students wanting to become "driving instructors"
and young adults studying road law/regulations, thus I have had a
voice in what driving instructors were supposed to teach their
students.
This has led me to realise that another issue needs to be addressed
that is rarely discussed:
Parent's
Involvement/Responsibility.
Parents need to find the time to spend with their teens, to help
improve their driving skills and to build their confidence. It is
easy to say I don't have the time, I work, have to look after the
younger children etc. Society as a whole today seems to have
abdicated responsibility when it comes to teaching their children,
after all it's so easy to just pay someone to do for them what we
don't have time for!
